Learn About LPN Careers

What is an LPN

An LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) provides vital care to patients, which includes assistance with eating, dressing, and bathing. They support Registered Nurses (RNs) and doctors by maintaining detailed records, ensuring clear communication within the care team, and helping patients and their families comprehend medical procedures and care for ill relatives. While some nurses choose to remain LPNs throughout their careers, this role can also serve as a valuable stepping stone for advancing one's education and achieving a higher salary as a Registered Nurse (RN).

What Do LPNs Do

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are vital to hospitals, nursing homes, doctors' offices, and various healthcare settings. They also offer personalized, one-on-one care to individuals. In their daily duties, LPNs deliver crucial nursing services to patients, including feeding, bathing, monitoring vital signs, and administering medications. Additionally, LPNs frequently serve as the initial point of contact for patients' families, tasked with clarifying procedures and care plans.

What Skills Do LPNs Need

LPNs must interact effectively with RNs, doctors, patients, and their families, necessitating strong communication skills to convey critical information both effectively and empathetically. Good bedside manners are integral to care provision and comforting patients. The most dedicated LPNs possess a true passion for helping others.

As an LPN, robust organizational skills are also essential. Nursing is a demanding, fast-paced profession that relies on efficient information management and multitasking. Without a solid organizational system, the risk of becoming overwhelmed and making errors increases.

Most crucially, LPNs must tolerate blood, bodily fluids, and the various aspects of human anatomy they will encounter. This role is not suited for everyone, and recognizing one's own limitations is vital.

How to Become an LPN

1. Enroll & Complete an LPN Training Program

RCI's LPN program prepares students to provide safe and effective care of the client across their lifespan. This program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing.

2. Take & Pass the NCLEX-PN Exam

Before you can start working as an LPN you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN exam). At RCI our programs are designed to prepare you to successfully challenge the NCLEX-PN.

3. Start your LPN Career

You can start applying for LPN jobs and begin your career as an LPN. Our team can support you with your job search.

Career Outlook

For those seeking to forge a rewarding career without extensive education, becoming an LPN is a viable option.

The demand for LPNs is expected the grow by 5% (faster the average) by 2032.

In 2023, the median annual salary for an LPN, as reported by the BLS, was $59,730.
